Choosing Your Burlesque Name: A Fun And Fabulous Step-By-Step Guide!
Burlesque is all about self-promotion! Here’s your ultimate guide to choosing an absolutely perfect, sexy, sassy, over-the-top, and utterly-unforgettable name that will make you shine!
When choosing a name for yourself in the burlesque world, there are three big factors to keep in mind: 1) Is it original?, 2)Is it memorable?, and 3) Does it fit your personality?
Yes, being mistaken for another performer is very embarrasing! So do yourself a favor and don’t choose a name that’s already been taken (or even come close).
First off, there are only a few big-name stars in this business, and their titles are very recognizable. Don’t try to copy them or your own name will sound like a pale shadow compared to their dazzling brilliance (and no one wants that). Greats like Dita Von Teese, Catherine D’Lish, and Michelle L’Amour are in a category by themselves, so avoid adding “Dita”, “Von Teese”, “D’Lish”, “L’Amour” and other ultra-famous burlesque tags to your own.
Also, google the hell out of your moniker before you settle on it. For example, if you’re considering Honey White, google “Honey White”, “Honey White burlesque”, “Honey White pinup”‘ “Honey White (name of your city)”, etc and if other burlesque-related performers, troupes, pin-up models, or businesses come up, skip it.
No one wants a name or tagline that is the same as a popular local establishment (like a bakery, coffee shop, or venue). And no one wants to copy the name of any pin-up or burlesque related business, either. (For example, you don’t want to be accused of copying a clothing company such as Deadly Dames, Pinup Girl, or Lux DeVille. And you also want to steer clear of the names famous pin-up models such as Masuimi Max, Doris MayDay, etc).
Search for your name on Red Hot Annie’s Burlesque Performers List and The Burlesque Stage Names Yahoo Group to make sure your name is not taken. If you don’t find your name, enter it to make sure others know you’re using it. These are certainly not exhaustive lists of all burlesque performers, but they’re the closest thing we have to a real database of names, so give them a look.
By taking just a little care at the beginning, you can ensure that your burlesque name is yours and yours alone. Not only will you be prouder of your spectacular new title, but it will be much much easier to market!
2)Is it memorable?
The number one rule of marketing?: Make yourself stand out!
You want your name to be different. You want it to be catchy. You’re craving something that sounds cute, sexy, dangerous, vaudevillian, or utterly incredible. Your burlesque name should be over-the-top, risky, and bold. Have fun with it!
Monikers like The Dirty Blonde, Blaze, Ali Oops,Vera High Voltage, Cardinal Cyn, La Cholita, and many many more are each superb because they really stand out from the crowd…
3) Does it fit your personality?
Plan your on-stage persona before you name yourself.
Will your acts be silly or sultry, traditional or modern, high energy or graceful? Will you have a signature such as ballet, playing the bongos, or tap dancing? Do you want to draw attention to a physical characteristic such as your boobs, your six-foot-tall frame, or your electric blue hair? Then do it with your name!
Let your name tell us something about yourself.
Now that you’ve got the basics down, here are a few lists to get those creative juices flowing. If you’re stuck on a name, try combining some of the following words and see where that takes you. Have fun and good luck!
