Sunday Spotlight: The Red Hot “Vaudezilla” Troupe of Chicago!

Burlesque troupes don’t get much hottter than Vaudezilla!

Created in 2008 by burlesque superstar Red Hot Annie, this production company has been a force to be reckoned with from the beginning. This talented group is a subject of the new documentary film “What A Tease!” and are setting a whole new standard in Chicago for burlesque variety shows.

One of the strengths of this troupe is its incredible diversity! Instead of pulling together burlesque starlets with very similar styles, Vaudezilla casts a wide net, in the tradition of classic vaudeville productions.

Take for example Shirley Knot, a first-class stand up comedian, or Mister Junior, a master of romantic boylesque. They also feature Trixie Sparx who is known for her in-your-face high energy burlesque openers, rock-inspired performances from Mia D. Vine, polished professional dance from Jeez Loueez and Anita Lilmore,  Po’Chop’s edgy performance-art-influenced burlesque pieces, and Booty Garland’s traditional booty-shakin’ numbers, all rounded out by the draw of Red Hot Annie’s well-known comedic burlesque turns.

And believe you me, all that adds up to one hell of a show!

Annie’s impact in Chicago is undeniable. She has been a major force in expanding and generating interest for the Chicago burlesque community (As evidenced by numerous major media interviews with outlets like TimeOut Chicago, The Chicago Reader, Check Please, WGN Radio, WCIU Television, the list goes on and on. Not to mention her staggering amount of experience onstage –over 350 burlesque performances and counting!)

Several of the members are nationally recognized performers in their own right. (In fact, both Red Hot Annie and Jeez Loueez have been voted into the Burlesque Top 50). There’s no doubt about it. Chicago is certainly lucky that performers of this caliber are channeling their creative energy into a top-notch troupe instead of going it solo. There’s real value in bringing talent like this together instead of spreading it thin. Don’t believe me? Just take a peek:

Have you seen Vaudezilla in person? If so, what did you think of the show? Do you know of another troupe with this amount of talent? Perhaps one that should be profiled here?
